Ernest Noel (born August 18, 1831 – died May 20, 1931) was an important British politician and businessman. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Dumfries Burghs in Scotland. He served as an MP from 1874 to 1886.

Ernest Noel was also the chairman of a company called the Artizans, Labourers & General Dwellings Company. This company built new homes for working-class families. A new neighborhood in Wood Green was named "Noel Park" in his honor. This happened while he was chairman, starting in 1880.

Ernest Noel's Family Life

Ernest Noel was the second son of Reverend Baptist Wriothesley Noel. His mother was Jane Noel. His father was also the tenth son of Sir Gerard Noel. Ernest's aunt was Diana, Baroness Barham. His uncle was Charles Noel, who later became the first Earl of Gainsborough.

Ernest Noel was married three times during his long life:

  • In 1857, he married Louisa Hope. She passed away in 1870.
  • In 1873, he married Lady Augusta Keppel. She passed away in 1902.
  • In 1909, he married Sidney Emily Saunders.

Ernest Noel lived to be very old. He died in May 1931, at the age of 99.

Ernest Noel's Career and Contributions

Ernest Noel received his education in Edinburgh, Scotland. He became a Fellow of the Geological Society in 1849. This means he was recognized for his knowledge in geology.

Early Work and Education

From 1851 to 1852, Ernest Noel worked with Hiram Williams. They were Civil Mineral Engineers. They helped survey mines in Snowdonia, Wales. This was for someone who wanted to buy the mines. Later, when he was 25, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge to study.

His Time as a Member of Parliament

Ernest Noel was a member of the Liberal Party. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Dumfries Burghs. He served in this role from 1874 to 1886.

After this, he tried to become an MP again. He ran in the 1886 and 1892 elections. This time, he ran for the area of Stirlingshire. He was part of the Liberal Unionist Party. However, he did not win these elections.

Helping People Live Better

From 1880, Ernest Noel was the chairman of the Artizans, Labourers & General Dwellings Company. This was a company that aimed to build better homes. They focused on creating improved housing for working-class families.

The company built a special housing estate in Wood Green. It was named "Noel Park" to honor Ernest Noel. This shows how important his work was in providing good homes.

Ernest Noel also held other important business roles. He was a deputy chairman for an insurance company. He was also chairman of the Mercantile Investment Trust. He continued this role until he was 95 years old.
