Ernest Riles, born on October 2, 1960, is a former American professional baseball player. He played as a shortstop and third baseman. From 1985 to 1993, Riles played for several teams in Major League Baseball (MLB). These teams included the Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Houston Astros, and Boston Red Sox. He was a left-handed batter and threw with his right hand.

Ernest Riles: A Baseball Star

Ernest Riles grew up in Georgia, U.S. He was the youngest of eleven children in his family. He had ten older brothers and one sister. Ernest loved baseball from a young age. He looked up to baseball legend Bert Campaneris. Riles went to Bainbridge High School in Bainbridge, Georgia. There, he played baseball under coach John Palermo.

Starting His Professional Journey

The Milwaukee Brewers signed Ernest Riles in the 1981 Major League Baseball Draft. This happened after he played at Middle Georgia College. In 1983, Riles showed amazing skill in the Texas League. He led the league in several important stats. These included batting average (.349), on-base percentage (.450), and OPS (.958). Because of his great performance, he moved up to the Triple-A Pacific Coast League the next year.

Making It to the Major Leagues

Ernest Riles made his big debut with the Milwaukee Brewers in the middle of the 1985 season. In his first time playing in the major leagues, he hit for a .286 batting average. He finished third in the vote for the MLB Rookie of the Year Award in the American League. He was behind Ozzie Guillén and his teammate Teddy Higuera.

Moving to the San Francisco Giants

After dealing with some injuries, Riles was traded from the Brewers. He went to the San Francisco Giants on June 8, 1988. The Giants needed more players for their infield at that time. While playing for the Giants, Ernest Riles hit the 10,000th home run in the team's history. This happened during a game where the Giants won 21–2 against the Cardinals. Riles also played in the 1989 World Series as a member of the Giants. He started the first two games of the World Series as the Designated Hitter.

Later Career and Achievements

After his time with the Giants, Ernest Riles also played for the Oakland Athletics and the Houston Astros. He finished his major league career with the Boston Red Sox in the 1993 season. Over his nine seasons in Major League Baseball, Riles played in 919 games played. He had a career batting average of .254. He hit 48 home runs and had 284 runs batted in.
