Ernest Maurice "Ernie" Vandeweghe Jr. (September 12, 1928 – November 8, 2014) was an American professional basketball player. He was also a doctor and a veteran of the United States Air Force. Ernie is best known for playing for the New York Knicks in the NBA.
Ernie Vandeweghe came from a very athletic family. His wife, Colleen Kay Hutchins, was crowned Miss America in 1952. Their son, Kiki Vandeweghe, became a famous NBA All-Star player and later a coach. Ernie's granddaughter, Coco Vandeweghe, is a professional tennis player.

Ernie Vandeweghe was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He grew up in Oceanside, New York, where he attended Oceanside High School.
After high school, Ernie went to Colgate University. He played college basketball for the Colgate Raiders from 1945 to 1949. In 1949, he was named a "Consensus second-team All-American." This means he was recognized as one of the best college basketball players in the entire country that year.
Playing for the New York Knicks
In 1949, Ernie Vandeweghe was drafted by the New York Knicks in the third round of the NBA draft. He played as a guard and Small forward for the Knicks from 1949 to 1956.
