History of Eros
Eros was started in the early 1900s by the Tremont Lumber company. It was a "boomtown" because a sawmill brought many jobs and people to the area. A woman named Mary Collins suggested naming the town after the Eros Asteroid, which was discovered in 1898.
Eros became an important place for many smaller towns nearby. Children from these communities often went to school in Eros. People also received their mail through Eros. The town was a social center, where events like "box suppers" (gatherings where people brought food in boxes to share or auction) were held.
By 1920, Eros was the biggest town in Jackson Parish. It had about a thousand residents. The town had a post office, hotels, a newspaper, stores, doctors, a drug store, churches, a jail, a bank, and even the first high school in Jackson Parish. About six hundred students attended the high school.
However, a big storm called a cyclone hit Eros in 1920. It badly damaged the sawmill. The mill was rebuilt, but then a fire destroyed it again in 1926. After these disasters, the lumber company decided most of the trees had been cut down. So, they moved their business to Olla, Louisiana. Only a few hundred people stayed in Eros after that.
