What Makes Errinundra Special?
Errinundra National Park is very important because it protects the largest cool temperate rainforest left in Victoria. It also has some of the most amazing old growth forests in southeastern Australia. These are forests with very old, huge trees that have been growing for a long time.
Amazing Plants and Animals
The park is home to many rare and endangered animals and plants. This means they are not found in many other places and need protection. Some of the special animals you might find here include:
The main types of plants and trees you'll see are cool and warm temperate rainforests. There are also wet open forests, montane forests (forests found in mountains), and woodlands. You can even find a sub-alpine wetland, which is a marshy area in a cooler, higher place.
Visiting the Park
Most of the park is only easy to visit during the drier months of the year. This is usually in summer and autumn. In winter, it can rain a lot or even snow. This makes the unsealed (dirt or gravel) roads very muddy and hard to drive on. So, it's best to plan your visit when the weather is dry.
Protecting the Forests
Before Errinundra National Park was officially created, some areas within what is now the park were used for logging trees. Even after the park was established, there were a few times when logging happened by mistake. However, the park's main purpose is to protect these unique and valuable forests and the animals that live there for everyone to enjoy now and in the future.
