The letter Es (С, с) is the seventeenth letter in the Cyrillic alphabet. It makes a sound like the "s" in "sun."
This letter has an interesting history! It comes from the ancient Greek alphabet letter called sigma (Σ, σ, ς). It looks a lot like the letter S in the Latin alphabet (the alphabet we use for English).

What is the Cyrillic Alphabet?
The Cyrillic alphabet is a writing system used for many languages, especially in Eastern Europe and Asia. Some of the most famous languages that use Cyrillic are Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian, and Bulgarian.
How Es is Used
Just like the letter "S" in English, Es is used to write many words. For example, in Russian, the word "мир" (mir) means "peace" or "world," and the letter "с" (Es) is used in words like "стол" (stol), which means "table."
Where Did Es Come From?
The Cyrillic alphabet was created in the 9th century. It was developed by Saint Cyril and Methodius or their students. They wanted to create a way for Slavic people to read religious texts. They based many of the letters on the Greek alphabet, which is why Es looks so much like the Greek letter sigma.
