Escape from Scorpion Island was an exciting adventure game show for kids. It was shown on the BBC in the UK. The show was all about contestants trying to 'escape from an exotic island'. This island seemed to have a mind of its own! To escape, players had to complete many different challenges.
The first series was made by RDF Television and filmed in Brazil. Later series were made by Foundation/Freehand for CBBC and ABC Television. These were filmed in Australia.
Three different pairs of presenters hosted the show. Caroline Flack and Reggie Yates hosted series 1. JK and Joel took over for series 2 and 3. Finally, Myleene Klass and Johny Pitts hosted series 4 and 5. The show ran for five series over four years. It ended in 2011 when the partnership between BBC and ABC finished.
How the Show Worked
The show brought together young adventurers aged 11 to 14. They came from either the UK or Australia. They arrived on a made-up place called 'Scorpion Island'. This was a tropical island that seemed to have its own personality.
Once on the island, the adventurers were split into two teams. These teams were usually called 'Team Sting' and 'Team Claw'. In series 3, there was even a third team called 'Team Venom'. For the first part of series 5, the teams were boys versus girls. The number of players on each team usually stayed the same. However, teams could sometimes lose, gain, or swap members. This depended on the series.
The main goal for every team was to escape the island. To do this, teams competed in many challenges. Winning challenges helped them get closer to escaping. The team that won the final challenge got to escape the island. The losing team or teams were left behind.
The show was filmed in different places each series. Each series also brought new challenges and stories. The challenges were a mix of brainy puzzles and tough physical tasks. Players did these challenges in small teams or on their own. Sometimes, a team that won an early challenge got an advantage. This might be a time bonus in the next challenge.
Here are some examples of the challenges:
- Moving objects while hanging in the air on wires.
- Climbing or abseiling down a rock face.
- Finishing a huge jigsaw puzzle.
- Collecting items or running through an obstacle course.
- Driving a special off-road buggy around a track.
- Swimming in a river and collecting objects.
- Filling a funnel with water to make an object float up.
- Building a raft and then paddling it.
- Throwing an object at a target to score points.
- Pulling heavy objects up a hill using ropes.
- Solving various mental and maths puzzles.
The final escape was made up of bigger, harder challenges. These were done in many stages. Everyone on each team took part. The team that won each stage got an advantage in the next stage. This continued until the very last round. The winning team then finally escaped the island!
