Essex is a small village located in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 841 people lived there. It is part of the larger Kankakee-Bradley area.
A Look Back in Time
Essex has a connection to Ira M. Lish (1855–1937). He was born in Essex and became a politician and lawyer in Illinois. A politician is someone who works in government, and a lawyer helps people with legal matters.
Long ago, people in the area used to dig for coal underground. Later, a different way of mining called open-pit mining started near Essex. This means digging coal from the surface, like a big open hole in the ground.

Essex is located in the western part of Kankakee County. It is about 19 miles (31 km) northwest of Kankakee, which is the main city of the county. It's also about 7 miles (11 km) south of Braidwood.
The village covers a total area of about 2.5 square miles (6.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.
