The Story of Jalisco Stadium
The Jalisco Stadium has a long and interesting history. For many years, it was the main home field for Guadalajara, one of Mexico's oldest football teams. They played there until 2010.
Today, the stadium is still the home field for two other important teams: Atlas from the top league, Liga MX, and Club Universidad de Guadalajara from the Liga de Expansión MX.
Big Games and Tournaments
The Jalisco Stadium has hosted many important international football events.
- It was one of the stadiums used for the football games during the 1968 Summer Olympics.
- It also hosted games in two different FIFA World Cup tournaments, in 1970 and 1986. During both of these big events, the stadium was the temporary home for the amazing Brazilian national team. This created a special connection between the people of Guadalajara and Brazil's team.
- The stadium is located right in the middle of a neighborhood called Colonia Independencia. It's also across from a bullring called Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso.
- In 1999, the stadium hosted eight games for the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup, including the match for third place.
After 50 years of playing at Jalisco Stadium, the Guadalajara team moved to a new stadium, the Estadio Omnilife, in 2010.
1970 FIFA World Cup Matches
During the 1970 FIFA World Cup, the Jalisco Stadium hosted eight matches. This included six group stage games, one quarterfinal match, and a semifinal. In that semifinal, Brazil won against Uruguay with a score of 3-1.
1986 FIFA World Cup Matches
The stadium hosted six matches during the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Brazil played all three of their group stage games there. The stadium also held a round-of-16 match, a quarterfinal, and a semifinal. Brazil played in almost every game held at the stadium during this tournament. They were expected to play in one of the semifinals too, but the French national football team beat them in the quarterfinals.
Stadium Upgrades
On January 31, 2017, the owners, Clubes Unidos de Jalisco, announced plans to make the stadium even better. These plans included:
- Replacing all the seats in the stadium.
- Fixing the old roof.
- Making the dressing rooms new and modern.
- Adding a huge 360-degree screen above the field.
The new 360-degree screen was supposed to be used for the first time during a match against Tigres UANL on September 8, 2017. However, the game had to be stopped. It was decided that the screen was installed too low, only 8 meters (about 26 feet) above the field. This made it impossible to play a normal football game safely.
