Estanys de Baiau, Spain, from Port de Baiau, Andorra.

Estanys de Baiau are two beautiful lakes located in Catalonia, Spain. They are very close to the border with Andorra, a small country in the Pyrenees mountains. These lakes are a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers because of the amazing mountain views around them.

Where are the Estanys de Baiau?

The Estanys de Baiau are found in the high mountains of the Pyrenees. They are about one kilometer away from the border that separates Spain and Andorra. The lakes are surrounded by several tall and famous mountains. To the east, you can see Pic de Baiau and Coma Pedrosa. Coma Pedrosa is actually the highest mountain in all of Andorra! To the south, you'll find Pic de Sanfonts.

Water Flow and Rivers

The water from both Estanys de Baiau lakes flows into a river called Riu de Baiau. This river then joins another stream known as the Barranc d'Arcalís. This system helps carry water down from the high mountains.

Hiking and Exploring the Lakes

The Estanys de Baiau area is a fantastic place for hiking adventures. A famous long-distance hiking path, called GR 11, goes right along the northern side of the lakes.

The GR 11 Hiking Path

As you follow the GR 11 path, you will pass by a mountain hut called Refugi de Baiau. This hut offers a place for hikers to rest or stay overnight. After the hut, the GR 11 path splits into two different routes:

  • GR 11.1: This path takes an easier route. It goes north of Pic de Comapedrosa, avoiding the steepest climbs.
  • GR 11: This main GR 11 path is much more challenging. It involves a steep climb of about 300 meters up loose rocks. This climb leads to a high mountain pass called Port de Baiau, which is about 2,800 meters (9,186 feet) above sea level.

Reaching Coma Pedrosa

From Port de Baiau, there is a side path that goes up to the very top of Pic de Comapedrosa. This is a great option for experienced hikers who want to reach Andorra's highest point.

Continuing the Journey

If you continue on the GR 11 path from Port de Baiau, the hiking becomes easier as you go downhill. This path leads you towards the town of Arinsal. On the way, you will pass another mountain hut, Refugi de Comapedrosa, which is another great spot for hikers to take a break.
