Political Journey
Esteban González Pons started his political career in 1993.
Serving in Spain's Parliament
He became a senator for Valencia province in 1993. At that time, he was the youngest person to be a senator. He held this position until 2003.
After that, he became a minister for culture, education, and sport in the regional parliament of Valencia, called the Cortes Valencianas. From 2007 to 2008, he was a spokesperson for his party.
In 2008, he was elected to the Spanish Congress of Deputies. This is like the main parliament in Spain. He represented the Valencia region. He was the main candidate for his party in that election, which meant he was very likely to win.
Representing Spain in Europe
In 2014, Esteban González Pons was chosen to be a top candidate for his party in the European elections. This meant he would represent Spain in the European Parliament.
As a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), he worked on important topics. He was part of the Committee on Budgets, which deals with money, and the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, which looks at rules and laws.
He also worked on relationships with other countries, like Israel. He was part of groups that focused on children's rights, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), and sports.
When another Spanish MEP, Miguel Arias Cañete, became a European Commissioner in 2014, González Pons became the leader of the Spanish group within the EPP Group in the European Parliament. He also helped lead meetings for justice and home affairs ministers. He even led a group that worked on Brexit, which was when the United Kingdom left the European Union.
After the 2019 elections, he helped create a plan for the European Parliament's work on important issues like rules of law, borders, and how people move between countries.
He is also one of the deputies for the chairman of the EPP group, Manfred Weber.
His Views and Stances
After Brexit, Esteban González Pons worked with other MEPs to suggest creating a special assembly between the EU and the UK. This assembly would help their parliaments work together.
In 2021, he and other MEPs wrote a letter asking for a change in the European Union's ambassador to Cuba. They believed the ambassador was too close to Cuba's government.
