Estherville is a city located in Emmet County, Iowa, in the United States. In 2020, about 5,904 people lived there. It is the main city, or county seat, of Emmet County.

History of Estherville

Emmet County was formed in 1851. The first settlers arrived in the Estherville area around 1856 and 1857. Estherville became the county seat in 1859 and officially became a city in 1881.

The city was named after Esther A. Ridley, one of the first women to settle there. Many people living in Estherville today are descendants of families from Scandinavia, Germany, and Ireland who moved there in the 1870s.

A large meteorite hit the ground near Estherville on May 10, 1879. One piece of the meteorite weighed about 500 pounds! A smaller piece weighed 170 pounds. Scientists from the University of Minnesota studied several parts of it.

Things to Do in Estherville

The Regional Wellness Center is a modern fitness facility. It was built through a partnership between the Estherville Lincoln Central Community School District and the National Guard. It has gym equipment, an indoor track, swimming pools with slides, and many fitness classes.

Estherville is also home to a newly updated Carnegie Library. You can use their free public wireless internet.

At the crossing of Iowa Highways 4 and 9, you can see a statue. It shows the Estherville meteorite breaking apart as it fell from the sky.

Fort Defiance State Park is a great place for outdoor activities. It has trails for hiking and horseback riding, a campsite, and outdoor meeting areas. The park was named after a military fort built in Estherville in 1863. This fort was created during a time of conflict with some Native American groups. Today, Fort Defiance State Park covers 191 acres and is managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Many White-tailed deer live in the park.

Education in Estherville

The Estherville–Lincoln Central Community School District manages the public schools in the area. This district was created in 1997 when the Estherville and Lincoln Central school districts joined together.

Since 2016, all elementary, middle, and high schools are located on one campus. This was part of a plan to build new school buildings and update the high school.

Estherville is also home to the main campus of Iowa Lakes Community College.

Sports in Estherville

In 1912, Estherville had its own minor league baseball team. The Estherville team won the championship in the 1912 Iowa State League. The team was managed by Harry Welch.

Local News and Media

The local newspaper is the Estherville Daily News, available in print and online. There are two local radio stations: KILR and KILR-FM. Estherville is part of the Sioux City television market.

On May 10, 1879, a 455-pound meteorite fell to Earth in Emmet County, just a few miles north of Estherville. It is now known as the Estherville Meteorite. When it landed, it buried itself 15 feet deep in the ground.

This meteorite is made of a special type of rock called mesosiderite, which is a mix of stone and iron. You can see parts of the Estherville Meteorite on display in several places around the world. These include the Estherville Public Library, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in the U.S., the Museum Reich der Kristalle in Munich, Germany, and the Natural History Museum, Vienna in Austria.

Notable People from Estherville

  • William M. McFarland (1848–1905) - He started newspapers in Iowa, including the Estherville Vindicator. He also served in the Iowa House of Representatives and was Iowa's Secretary of State.
  • Sherie Scheer (born 1940) - A well-known photographer who was born in Estherville.
  • Frank P. Woods (1868–1944) - He served five terms as a U.S. Representative from 1909 to 1919.
