Etelvino Vega Martínez was born in 1906. He became a well-known figure in Spain. He was involved in politics and the military. His life was shaped by big changes in his country.
Early Life and Political Steps
In 1931, Etelvino Vega was part of the Communist Party of Spain. He was on its main committee. In 1932, there was a failed attempt to take over the government. This was called the coup by Sanjurjo. Vega supported the government of the Second Spanish Republic. This was against the wishes of a group called the Comintern. Because of this, he and others were removed from his party. He lived in the Soviet Union for a while. Later, he came back to Spain.
Fighting in the Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War began in 1936. Etelvino Vega joined the fight. He first served with the Fifth Regiment. He fought on the Somosierra front. Later, he joined the Popular Army. He fought in the Battle of Guadalajara.
Leading Troops in Battle
Etelvino Vega became a strong military leader. He led the 34th division. This division was part of the 18th Army Corps. They fought in the Battle of Teruel. After that, he led the 12th Army Corps. This group fought in the important Battle of Ebro.
His Final Days
In March 1939, Etelvino Vega was made the military commander of Alicante. However, a new conflict arose. During a power struggle known as Casado’s coup, he was arrested. This happened on March 6 by supporters of Casado.
After the Spanish Civil War ended, he was captured. He was held in a camp called Albatera concentration camp. Etelvino Vega died in November 1939. Before he died, he gave his handkerchief to a cellmate. He asked him to give it to his wife. He said, "It's all I have, you give it to my wife."
