Etiene Pires de Medeiros (born May 24, 1991) is a super talented swimmer from Brazil. She competes in Backstroke and freestyle races. Many people think Etiene is the best Brazilian woman swimmer ever! She was the first Brazilian to win a gold medal in a World Championship (both long and short course pools). She was also the first Brazilian woman to win an individual gold medal at the Pan American Games. Etiene even held a world record, which was a huge achievement!

Etiene's Swimming Journey

Starting Out: 2008-2012

Etiene Medeiros started her international swimming career at just 17 years old. In 2008, she won a silver medal in the 50-meter backstroke at the 2008 FINA Youth World Swimming Championships.

She competed in the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome. There, she finished 21st in the 50-meter backstroke.

Etiene also swam at the 2010 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in Dubai. She placed 17th in the 50-meter backstroke.

In 2011, she went to the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in China. She finished 25th in the 50-meter backstroke. She also swam in the 4x100-meter medley relay.

At the 2011 Pan American Games, Etiene finished 10th in the 100-meter backstroke. She then competed at the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in Istanbul. She placed 10th in the 50-meter backstroke.

Big Wins and World Records: 2013-2016

In 2013, Etiene moved to São Paulo to train with a new coach. This change helped her a lot!

At the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, she made it to the final of the 50-meter backstroke. She finished in an amazing 4th place! This was the best finish ever for a Brazilian woman at the World Championships.

In 2014, Etiene Medeiros made history at the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in Doha, Qatar. She broke the world record in the 50-meter backstroke! She swam it in just 25.67 seconds. This made her the first Brazilian woman to win an individual gold medal at a World Championship.

She won three medals at this competition! She got gold in the 50-meter backstroke. She also won another gold in the 4x50-meter mixed medley relay. Plus, she earned a bronze medal in the 4x50-meter mixed freestyle relay.

Etiene kept breaking records. At the Brazilian Open, she set a new Americas' record in the 50-meter backstroke. She also broke the South American record in the 50-meter freestyle.

At the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, Etiene made history again. She won the first-ever gold medal for Brazilian women's swimming at the Pan American Games! This was in the 100-meter backstroke. She also won a silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle. Her team also earned two bronze medals in relays.

At the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Etiene became the first Brazilian woman to win a medal in a long-course World Championship. She won a silver medal in the 50-meter backstroke.

Olympic Dreams and More Gold: 2016-Present

Etiene competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She reached the final of the 50-meter freestyle, finishing 8th. She also set a new South American record in the semifinals for this event.

In 2016, at the 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in Windsor, Canada, Etiene won another gold medal. She was the 50-meter backstroke champion for the second time! She also won a silver medal in the 4x50 mixed medley relay.

At the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Etiene won her first gold medal in a long-course World Championship. This was in the 50-meter backstroke. She broke the Americas record twice during this competition!

In 2018, at the 2018 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in Hangzhou, China, Etiene had a small slip at the start of her favorite 50-meter backstroke race. But she didn't give up! She focused on the 50-meter freestyle and won an amazing bronze medal. She even broke the Americas Record in this race!

At the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, Etiene won a silver medal in the 50-meter backstroke. This was her third medal in a row in this event at the World Championships!

Later in 2019, at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, Etiene won her second individual gold medal. This was in the 50-meter freestyle. She won a total of five medals at these games! She earned two silvers in relays and two bronzes in other races.
