Etiene Pires de Medeiros (born May 24, 1991) is a famous Brazilian swimmer. She competes in both backstroke and freestyle races. Many people consider Etiene to be the best Brazilian woman swimmer of all time.

She made history by being the first Brazilian woman to win an individual gold medal at a World Championship. This includes both long and short course events. She was also the first Brazilian woman to win an individual gold medal at the Pan American Games. Etiene was also the first Brazilian woman in modern times to hold a world record in swimming.

Etiene's Swimming Journey

Early Career: 2008–2012

Etiene Medeiros started making waves in swimming at a young age. When she was 17, she won a silver medal. This was in the 50-meter backstroke at the 2008 FINA Youth World Swimming Championships.

She continued to compete in big events. At the 2009 World Aquatics Championships, she finished 21st in the 50-meter backstroke. She also swam in the 2010 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m). There, she placed 17th in the 50-meter backstroke.

Etiene joined the Brazilian team for the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in China. She finished 25th in the 50-meter backstroke. She also competed in the 2011 Pan American Games.

Rising Star: 2013–2016 Achievements

In 2013, Etiene moved to São Paulo to train with a new coach. She quickly improved her times. In April 2013, she set a personal best in the 50-meter backstroke.

At the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Spain, she reached the final of the 50-meter backstroke. She finished in 4th place, setting a new personal best time. This was the best finish ever for a Brazilian woman at a World Championship.

In 2014, Etiene broke three South American records. These were in the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter backstroke, and 100-meter backstroke.

World Record Holder

On December 7, 2014, Etiene made history at the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in Qatar. She broke the world record in the 50-meter backstroke with a time of 25.67 seconds. This made her the first Brazilian woman to win an individual gold medal at a World Championship. She also won another gold medal in a mixed relay event. Plus, she earned a bronze medal in another mixed relay.

Pan American Games Success

At the 2015 Pan American Games in Canada, Etiene continued to shine. She won the first gold medal in Brazilian women's swimming history at the Pan American Games. This was in the 100-meter backstroke, where she set a new Pan Am Games record. She also won a silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle. In addition, she helped her team win two bronze medals in relay races.

At the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Russia, Etiene won a silver medal in the 50-meter backstroke. This was another first for a Brazilian woman at a long-course World Championship.

Olympic Debut and Continued Success: 2016–Present

Etiene competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. She reached the final of the 50-meter freestyle, finishing 8th. She also set a new South American record in the semifinals of this event.

World Champion Again

In December 2016, at the 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in Canada, Etiene won another gold medal. She successfully defended her title in the 50-meter backstroke. She also earned a silver medal in a mixed relay event.

At the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Hungary, Etiene won her first gold medal at a long-course World Championships. She set a new Americas record in the 50-meter backstroke. This made her the first Brazilian woman to win a gold medal at a long-course World Championships.

More Medals and Records

At the 2018 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in China, Etiene won a bronze medal. This was in the 50-meter freestyle, a new achievement for Brazil in this event. She also set a new Americas record in the 50-meter freestyle.

In 2019, at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in South Korea, Etiene won a silver medal. This was her third medal in a row in the 50-meter backstroke at World Championships.

Later in 2019, at the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru, Etiene won another gold medal. This was in the 50-meter freestyle. She won a total of five medals at these games. She earned two silver medals in relays and two bronze medals in other events.
