Eugene Calvin Cheatham Jr. (born August 27, 1915 – died May 10, 2005) was a brave United States Air Force officer. He was also one of the famous Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American military pilots and airmen who fought in World War II. Cheatham flew many missions during the Korean War and later achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. His life story includes serving his country and achieving a special honor from the Boy Scouts of America.

Early Life and Boy Scouts

Eugene Cheatham Jr. was born in Georgia, USA. His father was a missionary, which meant his family lived in different places like Africa and Europe. When they lived in New York City, Eugene joined the Boy Scouts.

By 1930, he had completed all the steps to become an Eagle Scout. This is the highest rank in Boy Scouts. However, he couldn't afford a full uniform. Because of this, he never had his final review to officially earn the rank.

A Tuskegee Airman

Eugene Cheatham became a fighter pilot during World War II. He was part of the 332nd Fighter Group. This group is much better known as the Tuskegee Airmen. These pilots were African American and played a very important role in the war.

After World War II, Cheatham continued his service. He flew 150 missions during the Korean War. This shows his dedication and bravery as a pilot.

Military Career and Retirement

Cheatham served in the United States Air Force for many years. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a lieutenant colonel. He retired from the Air Force in 1977.

Even after retiring from flying, he continued to work for the Air Force. He served as an officer helping with personnel and equal opportunities. His work took him to different places, including Japan and various locations in the United States.

Earning the Eagle Scout Rank

In 2001, Cheatham attended a Veterans Day event. He shared his regret about not officially earning his Eagle Scout rank. He told this to one of the event organizers, who happened to be an Eagle Scout too.

This organizer and others decided to help Cheatham. They asked the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America to award him the rank. Since his old records were hard to find, the Scouts tested Cheatham. They also held a special review, following the rules from 1930.

On September 18, 2004, Eugene Cheatham Jr. finally received his Eagle Scout award. The ceremony took place at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. It was a special moment, recognizing his hard work from many years ago.

Later Life

Eugene Cheatham Jr. passed away on May 10, 2005. He died from pancreatic cancer. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, a place where many brave American service members are laid to rest.
