History of Spring Valley
Spring Valley gets its name from a natural spring found in the area. For a long time, it was home to the Kumeyaay people. They called the area Neti or Meti.
Later, Spanish explorers came and used the land for cattle. They called the spring El aguaje de San Jorge, which means "St. George's Spring."
In 1863, a judge named A. S. Ensworth from San Diego claimed a 160-acre ranch. This ranch included the important spring. He built a small adobe house there. The ranch was later sold to Rufus King Porter and then to a historian named Hubert Howe Bancroft. Today, that adobe house is a National Historic Landmark. This means it's a very important historical place.
