Eugene Taylor Sutton (born January 9, 1954) is an American Episcopal leader. He was the 14th Bishop of Maryland. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the church.

Eugene Sutton's Early Life and Schooling
Eugene Sutton grew up in Washington, D.C.. His family belonged to the Baptist church. In 1976, he finished his studies at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.
His Path to Ministry
He later earned a special degree called a Master of Divinity. This degree came from Western Theological Seminary. After that, he became a Minister in the Reformed Church in America.
Sutton continued his studies at Princeton Theological Seminary. A few years later, he joined the Episcopal Church. He finished his training for the Anglican ministry in 1993. This training happened at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.
Eugene Sutton's Career as a Leader
Before becoming a bishop, Sutton worked in churches in New Jersey and Washington, D.C. He also taught at several schools. These included the New Brunswick Theological Seminary and the Vanderbilt University Divinity School. He also taught at the General Theological Seminary.
Becoming the Bishop of Maryland
On June 28, 2008, Eugene Sutton became the Bishop of Maryland. He was chosen for this important role at a church meeting. The special ceremony where he became bishop was held at the Washington National Cathedral. Sutton had worked there before as a "canon pastor," which is a church leader.
He was the first African American bishop for the Diocese of Maryland. On June 29, 2008, he officially started his role. This ceremony took place at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Baltimore.
Retirement and Successor
On September 17, 2021, Bishop Sutton announced his plan to retire. He retired in 2024. The new bishop who took his place is the Right Reverend Canon Carrie Schofield-Broadbent. She was chosen in 2023.
