Eulogio Despujol y Dusay (in Catalan: Eulogi Despujol i Dusay) was an important Spanish leader. He served as the Governor-General of the Philippines from 1891 to 1893. He was also known as the Count of Caspe.
Who Was Eulogio Despujol?
Eulogio Despujol was born in Barcelona, Spain, on March 11, 1834. He was a general in the Spanish army. He received the special title of Count of Caspe from King Alfonso XII. This was after he won a battle in a town called Caspe during a war in Spain. This war was known as the Third Carlist War.
Leading the Philippines
As Governor-General, Eulogio Despujol was the highest Spanish official in the Philippines. He was in charge of the country for about two years. When he first started, he followed a more traditional way of governing. Later, he changed his approach to a more open and modern style.
Meeting José Rizal
During his time as Governor-General, Eulogio Despujol had important interactions with José Rizal. Rizal was a famous Filipino writer and a leader who wanted reforms for the Philippines.
Despujol ordered Rizal to be sent away to Dapitan, a town in Mindanao. Later, Rizal was on his way to Cuba to work as a doctor for the military. However, he was stopped in Barcelona, Spain. Despujol then sent Rizal back to the Philippines, where he lived the rest of his life.
