Euphranor was a very talented artist from ancient Greece, living around the middle of the 4th century BC. He was special because he was excellent at two different art forms: making sculptures (statues) and painting pictures. He came from a city called Corinth.

Who Was Euphranor?

Euphranor was known as a "polymath" in the art world, meaning he was skilled in many areas. He was famous for both his detailed paintings and his impressive sculptures.

What Kind of Art Did He Make?

A famous Roman writer named Pliny the Elder wrote down a list of Euphranor's known works.

  • His Paintings: Some of his paintings included exciting scenes like a cavalry battle (a fight with soldiers on horseback). He also painted stories from Greek myths, such as Theseus (a hero) and the clever trick of Odysseus pretending to be mad.
  • His Sculptures: Among his statues, he created figures of important gods and people. These included Paris (from the Trojan War), Leto with her children Apollo and Artemis (Greek gods), and even Philip and Alexander riding in chariots.

What Was His Artistic Style Like?

No statues that are definitely copies of Euphranor's work have been found today. However, experts believe his style was similar to another famous sculptor of his time, Lysippus.

Euphranor paid close attention to symmetry, which means making sure all parts of his art were balanced and in proportion. He also preferred to create figures that were a bit slimmer than those made by earlier artists. He loved to show heroic subjects, meaning he often painted or sculpted brave heroes and exciting stories.

He even wrote a book about proportions (how different parts of a body or object relate in size), but this book is now lost.

Who Were His Teachers?

Euphranor was a contemporary of another artist named Antorides. Both Euphranor and Antorides learned their skills from a teacher named Ariston.
