Euroa is a town in north-east Victoria, Australia. It is about 147 kilometers (91 miles) from Melbourne. The town is close to the Strathbogie Ranges. In 2006, about 2,776 people lived there. The name Euroa comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "joyful."

A Look at Euroa's Past
Early Days and Settlement
Major Mitchell was an explorer. He camped by the Seven Creeks in Euroa in 1836. This was during his trip from Sydney. The Post Office opened in Euroa on January 1, 1854. This happened as the town was being settled.
The Kelly Gang Bank Robbery
Euroa became well-known on December 10, 1878. This is when the bank was robbed by the Ned Kelly Gang. The gang managed to get away with about £2000. This was a lot of money back then.

Many old buildings still stand in Euroa today. They show the town's history.

The Euroa court house was built in 1892. It cost £1354 to build. The court house was closed in 1989.

For a long time, sheep farming was very important. Farmers brought fine wool Saxon merino sheep here in 1851. Today, farmers are earning more money from raising horses.

Euroa is located roughly halfway between Melbourne and Albury. The land around Euroa is mostly flat. However, the Strathbogie Ranges are about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south-east of the town.

Euroa has several places for older people to live. It also has one high school and two primary schools. The local government for the area, the Shire of Strathbogie, is based in Euroa.
Roads and Railways
The main road from Melbourne going north is the Hume Highway. A special road was built around Euroa. This bypass made the town quieter. It has also meant less growth for local businesses. The town is on the main North East railway. You can catch V/Line passenger trains here.

Euroa has an Australian Rules Football team. They are called the "Euroa Magpies." They play in the Goulburn Valley Football League.

Three brave people from the Euroa area won the Victoria Cross for Australia. This is a very high award for courage.
