Euros John Lewis (born January 31, 1942 – died June 23, 2014) was a talented Welsh cricketer. He was known for being a left-handed batsman, meaning he hit the ball with his left hand. He also bowled, using a style called "right-arm off break," which makes the ball spin away from a right-handed batter. Euros was born in Llanelli, a town in Carmarthenshire, Wales.
Playing for Glamorgan
Euros Lewis started his professional cricket career, known as first-class cricket, with the Glamorgan team. His very first match was in 1961 against Somerset.
When he first started, Euros was a strong opening batsman. This meant he was one of the first players to bat for his team. Later in his career, he focused more on his off break bowling skills. He also moved lower down the batting order.
In his first year, Euros played seven first-class matches for Glamorgan. He scored 450 runs and made three half centuries, which means he scored 50 runs or more three times in a single game. His highest score was 73 runs without being out.
By his second year in 1962, he was a regular player for Glamorgan. He played twelve first-class matches. While his batting wasn't as strong that year, his bowling improved a lot. He took 15 wickets. He also achieved his first "five-wicket haul," which means he took five wickets in one game. This happened against Cambridge University.
In 1963, a new type of cricket called List A cricket was introduced in England. Euros played in Glamorgan's first-ever List A match. Even though his team lost, Euros Lewis became the first Glamorgan player to score a half century in a one-day game, making 78 runs.
Playing for Sussex
After playing for Glamorgan until 1966, Euros Lewis moved to the Sussex team. He played for Sussex until 1969, when he retired from first-class cricket.
Later Life
Even after retiring from professional cricket, Euros continued to play club cricket for a team called Dafen Welfare for several years. He passed away on June 23, 2014, after a short illness.
