Glamorgan County Cricket Club (also known as Criced Morgannwg in Welsh) is a famous cricket team. It is one of eighteen "first-class" county clubs in England and Wales. This means they play at the highest level of domestic cricket. The club started in 1888 and represents the historic county of Glamorgan in Wales.
Glamorgan is special because it is the only top-level cricket club from Wales! They have won the County Championship three times: in 1948, 1969, and 1997. They have also beaten international teams from all the Test-playing nations, including Australia. Their team for shorter games, called "limited overs" matches, is simply known as Glamorgan. Their kit colours for these games are blue and yellow.
The club is based in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Most of their home games are played at Sophia Gardens. This ground is located right next to the River Taff. Sometimes, they also play matches in other Welsh towns like Swansea and Colwyn Bay.

Club History and Achievements
Early Days of Glamorgan Cricket
Cricket likely arrived in Wales and Glamorgan around the late 1600s. The first known cricket match in Glamorgan was played in Swansea in 1780. The Glamorgan County Cricket Club officially formed on July 6, 1888. This happened at a meeting held in the Angel Hotel in Cardiff.
For many years, the club played in the Minor Counties Championship. After the First World War, they applied to become a "first-class" team. This meant they could play against the top county teams.
Joining the County Championship
Glamorgan played its first official first-class match in 1921. They faced Sussex CCC at Cardiff Arms Park from May 18-20. This addition made the County Championship have 17 teams. Glamorgan, led by Captain N.V.H. Riches, won this first match by 23 runs! However, they only managed one more win that summer and finished last.
Winning the County Championship
Glamorgan won the County Championship for the first time in 1948. This was under the leadership of Captain Wilf Wooller. He believed that excellent fielding was key to winning, even against teams with stronger batters and bowlers.
A famous moment in cricket history happened at Glamorgan's ground in Swansea. On August 31, 1968, Gary Sobers hit six sixes in one over! This means he hit the ball out of the park for six runs on all six balls from bowler Malcolm Nash.
Glamorgan won the championship again in 1969 with Tony Lewis as captain. They won it a third time in 1997 under Matthew Maynard. Tony Lewis is the only Glamorgan player to have captained the England Test team. He led England on a tour to India and Pakistan in 1972-73. Matthew Maynard was one of the most successful batsmen in first-class cricket for 20 years.
Modern Success and Home Ground
In 2009, Sophia Gardens became a Test cricket venue. It hosted the first Test match of The Ashes series against Australia. This was a huge moment for Welsh cricket!
Glamorgan won their first trophy in 17 years in 2021. They beat Durham by 58 runs in the final of the Royal London One-Day Cup. They won this competition again in 2024. They had a 15-run win against Somerset in a shorter 20-overs-a-side game.
