Evangelos Venizelos (Greek: Ευάγγελος Βενιζέλος, born 1 January 1957) is a Greek lawyer, professor, and former politician. He served as Deputy Prime Minister of Greece from 2011 to 2015. He was also the Foreign Minister and Finance Minister of Greece.
Venizelos was a member of the Hellenic Parliament for the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) from 1993 to 2019. He is a professor of Constitutional Law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2012, he became the leader of the PASOK party.

Early Life and Education
Evangelos Venizelos was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, on January 1, 1957. He is married to Lila A. Bakatselou and they have one daughter. He is not related to the famous Greek leader Eleftherios Venizelos.
Studying Law and Languages
Venizelos studied at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from 1974 to 1978. He then continued his studies in France at Panthéon-Assas University. In 1980, he earned his PhD in Law from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Besides his native Greek, he also speaks French and English.
Career Before Politics
Before becoming a full-time politician, Evangelos Venizelos was known for his academic work. He has written many books and papers.
Published Works and Ideas
His writings often discuss the future of universities in Greece. He has also written about current political topics and foreign policy. More recently, his work has focused on political theory and cultural issues. He believes in the idea of a "civilization of civilizations" for Greece. This means that different cultures can exist together peacefully.
Political Journey
Evangelos Venizelos began his political journey as a student. He was active in student unions at his university in the 1970s.
Serving in Parliament
Venizelos was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the PASOK party in 1993. He represented the Thessaloniki A area. He was re-elected several times until 2019.
- He served on important committees in parliament.
- He was a spokesman for his party on the committee that revised the Greek Constitution.
- He also worked on committees for National Defence, Foreign Affairs, and European Affairs.
Since 2016, Venizelos has been part of the Greek team at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Here, he works on legal issues and human rights. He also helps with rules for how parliament works.
Holding Government Positions
Venizelos has held many important roles in the Greek government. He served as a minister in different departments:
- Minister for the Press and the Media: 1994 to 1995
- Minister for Transport and Communications: 1995 to 1996
- Minister for Justice: 1996
- Minister for Culture: 1996 to 1999 and again from 2000 to 2004
- Minister for Development: 1999 to 2000
- Minister for Finance: 2011 to 2012
- Deputy Prime Minister: 2011 to 2012 and again from 2013 to 2015
- Minister for Foreign Affairs: 2013 to 2015
Leading the PASOK Party
In 2007, Venizelos ran for the leadership of the PASOK party but was not elected. However, in 2012, he was elected as the leader of PASOK without opposition. He led the party in the general elections that year.
In 2011, when he became Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Greece was facing a big economic crisis. He said he was moving to the "real battle" to help reduce Greece's large debt. In 2019, Venizelos left the PASOK party.
