Evgeny Tomashevsky's Chess Journey

Early Successes in Chess

Evgeny Tomashevsky started playing chess at a young age. He quickly showed great promise. In 1997, he won the Russian championship for players under 10 years old. A few years later, in 2001, he won the Russian under-18 championship. He was only 13 at the time! This victory happened in Rybinsk, where he scored 9½ points out of 11 games. In 2004, he also finished as the runner-up in the under-18 division of the World Youth Chess Championships.

Becoming a European Champion

In 2007, Evgeny Tomashevsky achieved second place in the strong Aeroflot Open tournament. Two years later, in 2009, he won the 10th European Individual Chess Championship. This was a big win for him. The final match against Vladimir Malakhov was very exciting. It went into a special tie-break game called Armageddon. In this game, Malakhov made a mistake, and Tomashevsky won.

In January 2010, Evgeny was part of the Russian team that won the gold medal. This happened at the World Team Chess Championship in Bursa.

Helping a World Champion

In 2011, Tomashevsky tied for first place at the Aeroflot Open again. He shared the top spot with Nikita Vitiugov and Lê Quang Liêm. He finished third after tie-break rules were applied.

Evgeny also played an important role behind the scenes. He was one of the "seconds" for Boris Gelfand. A "second" is like a coach or assistant for a chess player. They help prepare for games and analyze opponents. This was for the World Chess Championship 2012.

Major Tournament Wins

February 2015 was a fantastic month for Tomashevsky. He won the Tbilisi leg of the FIDE Grand Prix 2014–15 series. He scored an impressive 8 points out of 11 games. He was 1½ points ahead of the second-place player, Dmitry Jakovenko. Evgeny did not lose any games in this tournament. He had big wins against strong players like Alexander Grischuk and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. His performance in this event was incredibly high.

Later that year, in August 2015, he won the Russian Championship Superfinal. This tournament took place in Chita, Zabaykalsky Krai. He scored 7½ points out of 11 games. The next year, in 2016, he played for the Russian team at the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku. His team won the bronze medal. In 2019, Tomashevsky won his second Russian Championship. This victory happened in Votkinsk and Izhevsk, where he scored 7 points out of 12.

The "Professor" of Chess

Evgeny Tomashevsky is known for his careful and thoughtful style of play. He is often called a "positional player." This means he focuses on building a strong position on the board rather than always looking for quick attacks. Because of his playing style, and because he wears glasses and is well-educated, other chess players gave him a special nickname: "Professor."
