Evgeny Yuryevich Tomashevsky (Russian: Евгений Юрьевич Томашевский; born on July 1, 1987) is a talented chess player from Russia. He earned the top title of Grandmaster in chess from FIDE in 2005. Evgeny has won the Russian Chess Championship twice, in 2015 and 2019. He also became the European Chess Champion in 2009. He has played in the FIDE World Cup many times, showing his skill on the world stage.

Evgeny's Chess Journey
Early Wins and Youth Championships
Evgeny Tomashevsky started his chess career with great success. In 1997, he won the Russian championship for players under 10 years old. A few years later, in 2001, he won the Russian under-18 championship. He was only 13 years old at the time! This big win happened in Rybinsk, where he scored 9½ points out of 11 games. In 2004, he came in second place at the World Youth Chess Championships in the under-18 group.
Becoming a European Champion
In 2007, Evgeny showed his growing strength by finishing second in the Aeroflot Open, a very strong chess tournament. His biggest win came in 2009 when he won the 10th European Individual Chess Championship. This was a tough competition, and he won after a special tie-break game called "armageddon chess." In this game, his opponent made a mistake, which led to Evgeny's victory.
In January 2010, Evgeny was part of the Russian team that won the gold medal. This was at the World Team Chess Championship in Bursa.
Helping a World Champion and More Success
In 2011, Evgeny tied for first place in the Aeroflot Open again. He shared the top spot with Nikita Vitiugov and Lê Quang Liêm. He also helped Boris Gelfand prepare for the World Chess Championship 2012. This shows that other top players valued his chess knowledge.
Winning the Russian Championship
Evgeny had a fantastic year in 2015. In February, he won the Tbilisi part of the FIDE Grand Prix 2014–15 series. He scored an impressive 8 points out of 11 games. He didn't lose any games and beat several strong players. His performance in this tournament was very high.
Later that year, in August 2015, he won his first Russian Championship Superfinal. This important tournament took place in Chita, Zabaykalsky Krai. He scored 7½ points out of 11 games. The next year, he played for the Russian team that won a bronze medal. This was at the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku. In 2019, Evgeny won his second Russian Championship. This time it was held in Votkinsk and Izhevsk, Udmurtia. He scored 7 points out of 12 games.
The "Professor" Nickname
Evgeny Tomashevsky is known among chess players by the nickname "Professor." This is partly because he often plays a very careful and strategic style of chess. This style is called "positional play." Also, he wears glasses and is known for being well-educated. These things together earned him this special nickname.
