Excel is a small community known as a hamlet in Alberta, Canada. It is located within a unique region called Special Area No. 3.
What's in a Name?
Early settlers gave Excel its name in 1911. They chose the name because they felt it perfectly described the general location of the area.
Understanding Hamlets
A hamlet is a very small community. It is usually smaller than a village or town. Hamlets often do not have their own local government. Instead, they are typically part of a larger municipal district or special area.
What are Special Areas?
Special Area No. 3 is one of three "Special Areas" in Alberta. These areas are managed differently from regular municipalities. The Special Areas Board governs them directly. This board works for the provincial government of Alberta. These areas were created to help manage large, often rural, regions.
