Exchange Place is a tall, modern building in Boston, Massachusetts. It's a skyscraper located in the city's busy Financial District. This area is where many businesses and banks are found.

The building stands 510 feet (155 meters) tall. It has 40 floors inside. Exchange Place was built between 1981 and 1985. It is currently the 14th tallest building in Boston.

A Look at Its History

Exchange Place was built on the site of an older building. This was the 12-story Boston Stock Exchange. That building was much older, built between 1889 and 1891. It was designed by architects Peabody and Stearns.

When plans were made to build the new skyscraper, the idea was to tear down the old building completely. However, people who wanted to save old buildings stepped in. These "preservationists" worked to save part of the old Stock Exchange's front. They succeeded, and a piece of history was kept.

In 1980, the original Exchange Building was given a special title. It was named a Boston Landmark by the Boston Landmarks Commission. This means it is an important part of Boston's history and look.

Who Works There?

Many different companies have offices inside Exchange Place. For example, the Boston Consulting Group is there. It is a company that helps other businesses.

Other companies include the advertising agency Hill Holliday. The marketing agency Optaros, which is part of MRM Worldwide, also has offices. Software company Acquia and Hachette Book Group, a large book publisher, are also tenants.

You can also find the Macquarie Group and The Blackstone Group in the building. AllianceBernstein and Circulation, Inc. are there too. In 2017, The Boston Globe newspaper moved its main office to Exchange Place.

Ownership of the Building

The company Brookfield Office Properties used to own Exchange Place. They bought it in 2006. Later, in 2011, they sold the building to another company. This company was UBS Realty Investors LLC.
