A Look Back: Exeter's History

Early Days and First Settlers

The land where Exeter now stands was given to Marblehead Academy in 1793. This academy was located in Marblehead, Massachusetts. In 1800, the area was divided into lots by Moses Hodsdon.

The very first person to settle here was Lemuel Tozier in 1801. Before it became an official town, people called the area "Blaisdelltown." This name likely came from Dr. John Blaisdell, who helped manage the land for the early owners.

Becoming a Town

Exeter officially became a town on February 16, 1811. The name "Exeter" was chosen to remember Exeter, New Hampshire. Some of the first settlers had moved from there.

The town's first school opened in 1804. Miss Anna M. Stevens was the first teacher. A few years later, in 1813, Levi Stevens built the first mill in Exeter. Mills were very important back then for grinding grain or sawing wood.

In 1859, Exeter had 1,853 people living there. By 1880, the population had dropped to 1,274. The United States Census counted 1,092 people in 2010. The most recent count in 2020 showed 963 residents.
