Extra (gum) facts for kids
Extra is a popular brand of sugarfree chewing gum. It is made by the Wrigley Company. You can find Extra gum in North America, Europe, Australia, and parts of Africa and Asia.
How Extra Gum Started
Extra gum first came out in 1984. It was the very first sugarfree gum made by the Wrigley Company. Extra quickly became one of the most popular chewing gum brands in the United States.
This gum was special because it used a new kind of sweetener called NutraSweet. This sweetener was thought to be safer and tasted less bitter than other sweeteners. Later, in 1997, the gum was changed to use aspartame instead.
Extra gum looks and tastes different in many countries. It often has unique flavors, logos, and slogans for each place. For example, Extra is a sponsor of the Mexico national football team.
In 2011, Extra also helped with dental health education. They worked with the Chinese Ministry of Health on a program. This program taught families in different communities about how to take care of their teeth. They even helped set up dental clinics and train local dentists.
In the UK, another Wrigley's gum called Orbit changed its name to Extra in 2015. It came in the same package as before.
A TV ad for Extra gum in 2017 showed a young woman playing football. Some people thought the ad was not safe, and a complaint was made about it.
