The F. L. Ames Gardener's Cottage is a small, historic house located in North Easton, Massachusetts. It was designed in 1884 by a very famous American architect named Henry Hobson Richardson. The house was built the next year, in 1885. This building is on what used to be the large Ames family estate. It was designed shortly after another building nearby, the Ames Gate Lodge, which Richardson also designed.
Who Built It?
The house was built for Frederick Lothrop Ames. He was a member of the wealthy Ames family, who were very important in Easton. They owned a lot of land and businesses. Frederick Ames also asked Richardson to design the nearby Old Colony Railroad Station.
The Ames family loved Richardson's work. They also had him design two other important buildings in North Easton:
These buildings are all great examples of Richardson's unique style.
About the Design
The F. L. Ames Gardener's Cottage was designed in a style called Richardsonian Romanesque. This style uses strong, heavy stone, round arches, and often has towers. Even though the Gardener's Cottage is small, it still shows some of these features.
One cool part of the house is a round tower on one corner. This is a common feature in Richardson's designs. Over the years, the outside of the house has been updated. Because of these changes, it's not as easy to tell it was designed by Richardson just by looking at it now. However, the basic shape and structure of the house are still the same. For a long time, the walls were covered in ivy, but this was removed during the updates.
A Historic Place
The F. L. Ames Gardener's Cottage is part of a special area called the H. H. Richardson Historic District of North Easton. This district includes many buildings designed by Richardson. It helps protect these important historical structures. The cottage was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This means it's recognized as a significant historical building in the United States.
