Fun Things to Do at Fairfield Park
Fairfield Park is packed with exciting places for recreation and sports.
Fairfield Adventure Park
One of the main attractions is the Fairfield Adventure Park. This huge playground is perfect for older kids and teens. It opened in April 2015 and cost about $1.4 million to build. Get ready for some thrills!
- It has an 11-meter-high climbing net.
- There's a cool sky bridge.
- You'll find a three-slide combination, which is one of the tallest in Australia!
- There's also a 33-meter-long double flying fox.
Other Sporty Spots
The park also has other great facilities:
- Fairfield Bowling Club is a place where you can try lawn bowls.
- There are tennis courts for a game with friends.
- You can challenge yourself on a 7,500 square meter obstacle course. It even has a 3-meter-high tree-top walk!
Indoor Fun at the Park
Fairfield Park also offers indoor activities:
- The Fairfield Youth and Community Centre opened in October 2015. It's a large hall with basketball courts, trampolines, and a rock climbing wall.
- Next door is the Fairfield Leisure Centre, which is an aquatic center. It has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a mini-water park, a squash court, and a gym.
Nature and Wildlife at the Park
Fairfield Park is home to lots of native plants and animals, making it a beautiful natural space.
Amazing Trees and Plants
The park has many native trees and shrubs. These are leftovers from the original Cumberland Plain Woodlands, which used to cover much of Sydney.
- You'll see tall eucalyptus trees like Eucalyptus amplifolia and Eucalyptus moluccana.
- Other native plants include Melaleuca decora, angophora floribunda, and Callistemon viminalis.
- Many of these trees have large canopies that provide lots of shade, perfect for a sunny day!
Prospect Creek and Its Wildlife
Prospect Creek flows along the eastern side of the park. There's a pedestrian bridge over the creek, offering nice views. The plants along the creek are part of a special "riparian zone," which means they grow near water.
You might spot some cool Australian birds here, such as:
- The Australian raven
- The Australian magpie
- The galah
How Big is Fairfield Park?
The entire park is about 18 hectares (that's about 44 acres). To give you an idea, a hectare is roughly the size of a rugby field! The main part of the park, not counting the area south of Prospect Creek, is about 12 hectares (about 30 acres). If you included Makepeace Oval, a sports field nearby, the whole parkland would be around 21 hectares (about 52 acres).
Getting to Fairfield Park
Fairfield Park is easy to get to!
- It's located on Vine Street.
- You can walk from Fairfield railway station in about 10 minutes.
- The park has many walkways and cycleways, especially near Prospect Creek. These paths connect the park to Carramar to the south and Fairfield East to the east.
- The Horsley Drive is a major road on the east side of the park.
- You can also enter the park from Haughton Street in Carramar, through a walk/cycleway that connects to Heiden Park.
Honoring History at Fairfield Park
Fairfield Park also has a special historical feature.
Honour Avenue
Honour Avenue is a memorial gateway at the entrance of Fairfield Park. It was built to remember the people from Fairfield who served in different wars during the 20th century, including World War II.
- A metal arch above the avenue displays the words: '1939 Honour Avenue 1945'.
- The avenue is lined with large brush Box trees and hill's weeping fig trees on both sides.
- There are also public seating areas where you can sit and reflect.
