Fairport was once a busy place in Modoc County, California. For about 20 years, it was a popular vacation spot. It also served as an important hub for moving supplies to and from the High Grade Mining District. This mining area was located in the Warner Mountains.

Where Was Fairport Located?

Fairport was situated in a specific part of California. It was about 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest of a town called New Pine Creek. The settlement was also very close to Goose Lake, only about 0.3 miles (0.5 km) to its east.

The Southern Pacific Railroad ran right through Fairport, making it easy to transport goods. It was also about 2.5 miles (4 km) north of Cottonwood Creek. Fairport sat at an elevation of 4,741 feet (1,445 meters) above sea level.

A Brief History of Fairport

Fairport was an active community for some time. It even had its own post office, which operated from 1912 to 1932. There was a short break in service during 1924.

The town was a key point for moving cattle and timber. This means it was a place where these goods were transferred from one type of transportation to another.

During its busiest years, Fairport was a strong competitor with nearby New Pine Creek. Both towns wanted to be the most important place between Sugar Hill and Lakeview, Oregon.

However, Fairport's importance began to fade. This happened when the mining activities in the area stopped. Also, the water levels in Goose Lake went down. Over time, the town's purpose became less clear.

Today, only a few homes remain in Fairport. The old business buildings and the post office were torn down. The town has not been shown on local maps since the time of the Great Depression. It is no longer recognized as a community.

Fairport's Climate

The area where Fairport was located has a special kind of weather. Summers there are warm but not extremely hot. The average monthly temperatures never go above 71.6 °F (22 °C).

This type of weather is known as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. Climate scientists use the Köppen Climate Classification system to describe it. On climate maps, this specific climate is often shortened to "Csb."
