Early Life and Dance
Fallulah grew up in Tårnby, a town on Amager island near Copenhagen, Denmark. She went to a boarding school called Haarby efterskole. Later, she attended Kalundborg Gymnasium.
Her Danish mother, Lillian Apetri, and Romanian father, Nicolae Apetri, started a dance group. This group focused on traditional Balkan folk dance. Because of this, Fallulah spent much of her childhood traveling. She went on dance tours in the Balkans and Eastern Europe. This dancing stopped when she was nine years old. Her family then moved to Jyderup in northwest Zealand. Fallulah continued her dancing there. When she was 21, she moved to New York to study at the Broadway Dance Center. However, she soon returned to Denmark to focus on making music.
Music Career Highlights
Fallulah's music has been compared to other artists like Florence and the Machine and Bat for Lashes. She performed at the Start! festival. A Danish music magazine, Soundvenue, also featured her. Her song "I Lay My Head" was very popular on the national radio station DR P3 in 2009.
In October 2009, she released a song for a Danish film called Simon and Malou. The song was titled "No Time for Love." It was written by Bryan Adams and Gretchen Peters. She released it under her birth name, Maria Apetri.
Her song "Bridges" was the most played song by a Danish artist on DR P3 in 2010. In January 2011, Fallulah won the important "P3 Guld" award. This award celebrates Danish music. Later in 2011, she had another big hit with "Out of It." This song was used as the intro for a Danish TV show called Lykke. For many weeks, "Out of It" was the most downloaded song on Danish iTunes. It also reached number one on the Danish music charts and radio lists. This success helped her win a Danish Music Award, which is like a Danish Grammy. She won in the "Hit of the Year" category.
Her second album, Escapism, came out in Denmark in February 2013. Her third album, Perfect Tense, followed in February 2016. In 2019, Fallulah started her own record label. She began releasing her music herself instead of through big companies. Her fourth album, All My Eyes Are Open, was released in November 2020. Her fifth album, Celeste, came out in May 2023.
