What Was the Far Eastern Republic?
The Far Eastern Republic was a state that was officially independent. However, it was actually controlled by Soviet Russia. It acted as a "buffer state." This means it was a neutral zone between Soviet Russia and Japan. Japan had soldiers in the area after World War I.
Why Was It Created?
After the Russian Revolution in 1917, a big fight called the Russian Civil War began. This war was between the Bolsheviks (Red Army) and their enemies (White Army). Other countries, like Japan and the United States, also sent troops to Russia.
Soviet Russia wanted to avoid a direct war with Japan. So, they created the Far Eastern Republic. This new country was supposed to be a friendly, independent neighbor. It helped keep the peace between Soviet Russia and Japan.
Where Was Its Capital?
The first capital city of the Far Eastern Republic was Verkhneudinsk. This lasted until October 1920. After that, the capital moved to Chita.
Who Led the Republic?
The Far Eastern Republic had its own leaders. Alexander Krasnoshchyokov was the first head of state from 1920 to 1921. Later, Nikolay Matveyev took over from 1921 to 1922. These leaders worked to manage the new country.
The End of the Republic
By 1922, the Russian Civil War was mostly over. Japan also started to pull its troops out of the region. There was no longer a need for the buffer state. On November 15, 1922, the Far Eastern Republic joined Soviet Russia. It became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. This was a big step in forming the Soviet Union.
