A Look Back: Farmingville's History
The first people settled in Farmingville in the late 1700s. Back then, it had different names like Bald Hills and Mooney Ponds. Even though it's called Farmingville, the land isn't actually great for farming. The area didn't even have its own post office until 1950.
Early Education and Historic Buildings
The first teacher in the local school was Elijah Terry. His home was built in 1823. Next to his house is the Bald Hill Schoolhouse, which was built in 1850. This old schoolhouse is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Bald Hill: A Local Landmark
Bald Hill is one of the highest spots on Long Island. It was formed by a giant glacier that stopped its movement there a long, long time ago.
At the top of Bald Hill, you'll find the Vietnam Memorial Park. This park has a special monument painted red, white, and blue. It was built to honor veterans and was dedicated on November 11, 1991.
The Bald Hill Cultural Center is also located here. It has an outdoor concert venue called the Long Island Community Hospital Amphitheater. From 1965 to 1980, this area was even a ski resort!
