Farris is a small, unincorporated community located in Atoka County, Oklahoma, in the United States. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Farris is found east of Atoka, which is the main town in the county. It's also close to the county border, right along Highway 3.

About Farris

Farris is a quiet community in Oklahoma. It's known for its history and the natural beauty around it. The community is located in a part of Oklahoma that was once known as the Choctaw Nation.

School Days in Farris

For many years, from 1914 to 2013, Farris had its own school district. This district included a school for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. However, over time, fewer and fewer students attended the school.

By 2012, the school district faced some challenges. The Oklahoma State Department of Education gave the school an "F" rating. Because of these issues, the community decided to close the school district in early 2013. Students now attend school in nearby Lane. Older students, those above eighth grade, travel about twenty miles west to attend Atoka High School in Atoka.

Early History of Farris

The Farris post office was officially opened on May 17, 1902. At that time, this area was known as Indian Territory. The community was named after its very first postmaster, a person named John L. Farris. When it was founded, Farris was part of Jacks Fork County, which was within the Choctaw Nation.

Nature Around Farris

Farris is surrounded by interesting natural features. A short distance to the northwest, you'll find McGee Creek Reservoir. This reservoir is a large body of water created by holding back the waters of McGee Creek. McGee Creek is a smaller stream that flows into Muddy Boggy Creek, which runs west of Farris. These creeks and the reservoir are important parts of the local environment.
