Fat Princess is an exciting action and real-time strategy video game. It was made by Titan Studios and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. The game first came out on July 30, 2009. In Japan, it is known as Pocchari Princess (ぽっちゃり☆プリンセス, Pocchari ☆ Purinsesu).

Later, a version for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) was released in 2010. This portable game was called Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake. It was also included in a collection of games called Best of PlayStation Network Vol. 1 in 2013.

Fat Princess is a multiplayer game where up to 32 players can join in. The main goal is to rescue your team's princess. You need to bring her back to your base. It's a fun twist on the classic game of capture the flag. Players can also pick up and carry cakes. These cakes are used to feed the enemy princess. This makes her heavier and much harder for the enemy team to carry her back to their own castle.

The game has six main character types, called classes. These are the Villager, Worker, Priest, Ranger, Mage, and Warrior. There are also three extra classes you can download: Pirate, Ninja, and Giant. Each class helps the team capture the princess in its own special way. A new game, Fat Princess Adventures, came out in December 2015 for the PlayStation 4.

How to Play Fat Princess

Feeding Fat Princess
Feeding the enemy princess pieces of cake makes her harder to carry.

In Fat Princess, you play as a member of a team. There are two teams, red and blue. Each team can have up to 16 players, making 32 players in total. To make it harder for your opponents, you can feed their captured princess slices of cake. The more cake she eats, the heavier she gets. This makes her much harder for the enemy team to carry her back to their castle. Don't worry, the effect of the cake wears off over time.

Choosing Your Character Class

Players can change their character class and abilities. You do this by picking up hats. These hats are made by special hat machines at your team's castle. You can also find hats on the battlefield where enemies have been defeated.

The game has six main classes:

  • Villager: A basic class, good for gathering resources.
  • Priest: Can heal teammates.
  • Mage: Uses magic attacks.
  • Warrior: Strong in close combat.
  • Ranger: Good with ranged weapons like bows.
  • Worker: Can build and repair structures.

There are also three extra classes from the Fat Roles add-on pack: Pirate, Ninja, and Giant. Each class has its own special skills and different amounts of health. If you take damage, your health goes down. All classes except the Giant can sit down and eat cake to get their health back. The three classes from the Fat Roles add-on don't come from hat machines. Instead, you find a "magic hat." You can pick up this hat and press the Triangle button to switch between these three special classes.

Upgrades and Building

You can also upgrade the hat machines in your castle. This gives your classes new weapons or attacks. You can also build forts and special equipment like catapults. To do this, you need resources like wood and ore. You can find these resources in different places on each map. The Pirate, Ninja, and Giant classes cannot be upgraded. However, they have "magic points" that build up over time. When their magic bar is full, they can use powerful special abilities. Pirates can fire cannonballs, Ninjas can turn invisible, and Giants can eat enemies to regain health.

Other useful items in the game include bombs. There are also potions that can turn players into chickens when thrown. Torches can be used by most classes to set their weapons on fire, which causes extra damage.

Game Modes to Play

Fat Princess has several exciting game modes:

  • Legend of the Fat Princess: This is the story mode. It has seven chapters and six levels. It lets you try out all the other game modes.
  • Rescue the Princess: This is the main game mode. Your goal is to rescue your princess from the enemy's castle. At the same time, you must keep the enemy's princess locked up in your own castle.
  • Team Deathmatch: In this mode, the goal is to defeat members of the other team. The first team to make the opposing team's life count reach zero wins. There is no princess to rescue in this mode.
  • Invasion: The goal here is to capture outposts (small bases). If your team controls half of all the outposts, the other team's timer will start counting down. The first team whose timer reaches zero loses.
  • Snatch 'n Grab: This mode is like "Rescue the Princess." But, both teams start with their princesses already in their castles. Your goal is to kidnap the enemy's princess and put her in your dungeon. Once she's in the dungeon, she will disappear and reappear back in her castle. The first team to kidnap and imprison the enemy princess three times wins.
  • Queen's Rule: This is a special mode only available on the soccer map. When you pick this map, the game automatically switches to this mode. There are no princesses or hat machines here. Hats, bombs, and resources will sometimes fall from the sky. The goal is to get the soccer ball into the other team's goal. The team with more goals at the end wins.
  • Gladiate: In this mode, you play mostly by yourself, not on a team. You choose a hat at the start and stay in that class for the whole game. There are 12 rounds to win, and new enemies appear in some rounds.

Making the Game: Development

A special test version of the game, called a private beta, was held in June 2009. This allowed a small group of players to try the game before it was released. The game was officially released on July 30, 2009.

PlayStation Home Event

From July 30 to September 10, 2009, Sony held a special event in PlayStation Home. PlayStation Home was a virtual world where players could meet up. This event was called "Fat Princess: Quest for Cake." Players had to find eight pieces of cake hidden in cages. If they found all of them, they won a "Fat Princess: Throne" for their virtual apartment. This event took place in special areas within PlayStation Home.

Extra Content: Downloadable Content

An extra pack for the game, called Fat Roles, was released on June 19, 2010. This pack added three new character classes: the Pirate, Ninja, and Giant. A free update was also released at the same time. This update added support for playing with a friend on the same screen. It also allowed players to use clan tags and create private games with passwords.

Portable Version: PSP

A version of Fat Princess for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) was made by SuperVillain Studios. It was released in March 2010 and was called Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake. This PSP version had four new multiplayer modes that were not in the original game. These modes were Demolition, Dilapidation, Grim Reaper, and Jailbreak. It also had six more levels and a bigger single-player story mode that included the new game types.
