Becoming a Leader: Her Appointment
On November 4, 2012, Fawzia Yusuf Haji Adam was chosen for two very important roles. The Prime Minister of Somalia, Abdi Farah Shirdon, named her the Foreign Minister. She also became the Deputy Prime Minister. This was a very special moment because she was the first woman ever to hold these positions in Somalia.
Getting Back Somalia's Money and Property
In November 2012, the Somali government asked the United Nations Security Council for help. They wanted to get back public money and property that was held in other countries. These valuable things had been frozen by foreign governments and companies. This happened after Somalia's central government collapsed in 1991.
In January 2013, Fawzia Adam and other government members started working on this. They began to find and recover Somalia's national assets. These included ships and planes. They believed these items were being held in countries like Italy, Germany, and Yemen.
Agreements with Other Countries
Working with the United Arab Emirates
In May 2013, Fawzia Adam met with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He is the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They signed an important agreement called a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement helped Somalia and the UAE become official diplomatic friends again.
The agreement also focused on working together in many areas. These included politics, safety, money, and development. The UAE government also announced that it would open its embassy again in Mogadishu, Somalia's capital.
Cooperation with China
In August 2013, Fawzia Adam met with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang. She announced that Somalia wanted to work closely with the Chinese government. They hoped to cooperate in areas like energy, buildings, national security, and farming.
Wang Yang praised the long friendship between China and Somalia. He also said China would continue to support peace in Somalia. In September 2013, both governments signed an official agreement in Mogadishu. This was part of Somalia's five-year plan to rebuild the country.
Through this agreement, China promised to rebuild several important places in Mogadishu. These included the National Theatre, a hospital, and the Mogadishu Stadium. The Chinese ambassador also said that China would reopen its embassy in Mogadishu. Somalia had given them land for this purpose.
End of Her Term
Fawzia Adam's time as Somalia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister ended on January 17, 2014. The new Prime Minister, Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, appointed new people to these roles. Abdirahman Duale Beyle became the new Foreign Minister, and Ridwan Hirsi Mohamed became the new Deputy Prime Minister.
