Fawzia Yusuf Haji Adam is an important politician from Somalia. She served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia from November 2012 to January 2014. In January 2024, Somalia put her name forward for a big role: the Chairperson of the African Union Commission. This is a very important position for the whole African continent.

Fawzia Yusuf Haji Adam's Career

Becoming a Minister

On November 4, 2012, Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon chose Fawzia Adam to be Somalia's Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. This was a special moment because she was the first woman ever to hold the position of Foreign Minister in Somalia.

Getting Back Somali Assets

In November 2012, the Somali government asked the United Nations Security Council for help. They wanted to get back public money and properties that were held in other countries. These properties had been frozen since Somalia's central government fell in 1991. In January 2013, Fawzia Adam and other government members started working to find and recover these national assets. These included ships and planes believed to be in countries like Italy, Germany, and Yemen.

Agreements with Other Countries

Working with the UAE

In May 2013, Fawzia Adam and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), signed an important agreement. This agreement helped Somalia and the UAE become official diplomatic partners again. It also focused on working together in areas like politics, security, economy, and development. The UAE government also announced that it would reopen its embassy in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu.

Partnering with China

In August 2013, Fawzia Adam met with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang. After their meeting, she announced that Somalia wanted to work closely with China. They planned to cooperate in areas like energy, building new structures, national security, and farming. Wang Yang also spoke about the long-standing friendship between the two nations. He confirmed China's support for peace in Somalia.

In September 2013, both governments signed an official cooperation agreement in Mogadishu. This was part of Somalia's five-year plan to rebuild the country. Under this agreement, China agreed to help rebuild several important buildings in Mogadishu and other places. These included the National Theatre, a hospital, and the Mogadishu Stadium. The Chinese ambassador also said that China would reopen its embassy in Mogadishu on land given by the Somali government.

End of Her Term

Fawzia Adam's time as Somalia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister ended on January 17, 2014. The new Prime Minister, Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, then appointed Abdirahman Duale Beyle as the new Foreign Minister and Ridwan Hirsi Mohamed as the new Deputy Prime Minister.

Running for President

Fawzia Adam also ran for the presidency of Somalia in the 2022 Somali presidential election.
