History of Fayetteville
Fayetteville got its name from Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. He was a French general who became a hero in the American Revolutionary War. A post office has been open in Fayetteville since 1826.
Geography and Location
Fayetteville is in the eastern part of Franklin County. Its exact location is 39°54′43″N 77°33′49″W / 39.91194°N 77.56361°W.
Roads and Nearby Cities
U.S. Route 30 goes right through Fayetteville. This road can take you about 18 miles (29 km) east to Gettysburg. It can also take you about 6 miles (10 km) west to Chambersburg. Chambersburg is the main town in Franklin County.
Water Features
The Conococheague Creek flows along the northern edge of Fayetteville. This creek eventually flows into the Potomac River.
