History of Fayetteville

Early Settlers and Naming

Fayetteville started in an area first given to Alex Thompson and George Cumberland. The very first settlers were families led by John Crier, James Cummins, and James J. Ross. These three were part of the "Old Three Hundred". This was a group of 300 families who received land grants in Texas from Stephen F. Austin.

The town grew around a stagecoach stop. This stop was on an old road that connected San Felipe and Bastrop.

Even though Fayette County was named after General Lafayette, a hero from the American Revolutionary War, the town itself got its name in 1844. It was named after Fayetteville, North Carolina. This was the birthplace of Philip J. Shaver. He was an important citizen who helped plan the town's streets. He also gave land for the Fayetteville Academy and the town's Union Church.

Fayetteville officially became a city in 1882. This means it gained the legal rights of a city.

Fayetteville During World War I

Fayetteville was in the news across the country during World War I. In 1918, the town's mayor, W. C. Langlotz, and ten other citizens were arrested. This happened after the German Empire flag was displayed at the Germania club in Fayetteville.

The mayor explained that the flag was shown by mistake. The group said they were not guilty of any wrongdoing. This event showed how feelings were running high during the war.

Historic District Recognition

Most of the town's area is now called the Fayetteville Historic District. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 10, 2008. This means its historic buildings and areas are protected and recognized for their importance.
