Fazıl Küçük (born March 14, 1906 – died January 15, 1984) was an important Turkish Cypriot leader. He was a medical doctor and also the very first Vice President of the Republic of Cyprus.
About Fazıl Küçük
Fazıl Küçük was born in Nicosia in 1906. His father was a farmer. After finishing high school, he studied medicine. He went to universities in Istanbul, Lausanne, and Paris.
In 1937, Küçük came back to Cyprus. He started working as a doctor. But he was also very interested in politics. He wanted to help the Turkish Cypriot people. He became a strong voice for their rights.
In 1941, Küçük started his own newspaper. It was called Halkın Sesi, which means "The Voice of the People". He was the main editor. He used his newspaper to speak out against the British rulers of Cyprus. His newspaper is still published today.
Early Political Work
In 1943, Fazıl Küçük helped create a group called KATAK. This group worked to improve life for Turkish Cypriots. They focused on social, economic, and political issues.
Later, Küçük disagreed with some members of KATAK. So, he started a new group. It was called KMTHP, the Cyprus National Turkish People's Party. He also worked for 15 years to transfer the Evkaf. This was a Turkish religious fund. He helped move its control from the British to the Turkish Cypriots.
Becoming Vice President
In 1959, important meetings happened in London and Zurich. These meetings were about creating an independent Republic of Cyprus. Küçük represented the Turkish Cypriot community. He worked hard to protect their rights in the new country's rules.
On December 3, 1959, Fazıl Küçük was chosen. He became the Vice President of the new Republic of Cyprus. He served in this role until 1973. After him, Rauf Denktaş became Vice President.
Even when he was not well, Küçük kept helping Turkish Cypriots. He continued to support them through his Halkın Sesi newspaper.
Fazıl Küçük passed away in a hospital in London. This was on January 15, 1984. He was the uncle of İrsen Küçük. İrsen Küçük later became a prime minister in Northern Cyprus.
