Fearrington Village started in 1974. A couple named R.B. Fitch and his wife Jenny bought a dairy farm that was over 200 years old. This farm had been in the Fearrington family since 1786.
The Fitches wanted to create a community that felt like the small villages in England. They designed the Fearrington Village Center to look like these old English hamlets. This was before the idea of "mixed-use communities" became popular.
Over the years, Fearrington Village has grown a lot. Today, more than 1,800 people live there. It also has a country inn and restaurant called The Fearrington House. There's a cafe, shops, and even artist studios.
The Fearrington House Country Inn is very famous. It has won many awards, including the AAA Five Diamond award for 15 years in a row. It's also North Carolina's only five-star hotel, according to the Mobil Travel Guide.
Belted Galloway Cows
In 1983, a special type of cow was brought to the farm. These are called Belted Galloway cows. They are easy to spot because they are black (or sometimes brown) with a wide white band around their middle. These cows have become a symbol, or "mascot," for Fearrington Village.
