Early Life and Family
Federico Campbell was born on July 1, 1941, in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. His mother, Carmen Quiroz, was a teacher. His father, Federico Campbell, worked as a telegraph operator. His family had roots in Scotland and America. They moved to Mexico from Virginia in the 1830s. Federico had two sisters named Sarina and Silvia.
His Career and Achievements
Campbell became famous for his collection of short stories called Tijuanenses. This book was also published in English as Tijuana: Stories on the Border. In 2000, he won the Colima Prize for Fiction. He received this award for his book Transpeninsular.
In 1995, he was given the J. S. Guggenheim Fellowship. This is a special award that helps talented people with their work. Federico Campbell also translated many books. He brought works by writers like Harold Pinter and Leonardo Sciascia into Spanish. His son, Federico Campbell Peña, also became a writer and journalist.
Later Life
Federico Campbell passed away on February 15, 2014. He was 72 years old. He died in Mexico City after having a stroke. His writings continue to be important in Mexican literature.
