Federico Trillo-Figueroa Martínez-Conde (born on May 23, 1952) is a Spanish politician. He has held several important roles in Spain. These include being the President of the Congress of Deputies, the Minister of Defense, and Spain's Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Federico Trillo studied law at the University of Salamanca. He also earned a higher degree (PhD) from the Complutense University of Madrid. He began his career in the Spanish Navy's Legal Corps in 1974. Later, he worked for the Spanish Council of State. In 1989, he left the navy to start his political career.

In 1983, he joined the Alianza Popular (People's Alliance) party. He helped change this party into the People's Party. He has been an important member of this party since 1986.

Serving in the Congress of Deputies

Federico Trillo was first elected as a deputy for the province of Alicante in 1989. A deputy is like a representative who helps make laws for the country. From 1989 to 1996, he was the vice-president of the Congress of Deputies. This is the main law-making body in Spain.

President of the Congress

On March 27, 1996, he was chosen to be the President of the Congress of Deputies. He held this important position until 2000. As President, he was in charge of leading the meetings and debates in the Congress.

Minister of Defense

In April 2000, Prime Minister José María Aznar appointed him as the Minister of Defense. In this role, he was responsible for Spain's military and national security. During his time as Minister, he ordered an operation on Perejil Island in 2002. This island had been occupied by Moroccan soldiers.

His time as Minister ended in 2004.

Ambassador to the United Kingdom

From 2012 to 2017, Federico Trillo served as Spain's Ambassador to the United Kingdom. An ambassador represents their country in another nation. Their job is to build good relationships and work on shared interests.

Personal Life and Background

Federico Trillo-Figueroa Martínez-Conde was born in Cartagena, Murcia, on May 23, 1952. His father, Federico Trillo-Figueroa Vázquez, was a military lawyer and held important roles in the government. His mother was Eloísa Martínez-Conde Muñoz.

In 1976, Federico Trillo married María José Molinuevo. She is also a lawyer. They have five children: María José, Federico, Marta, Mercedes, and Santiago. He is a Catholic and a member of Opus Dei.

Education and Early Work

Federico Trillo studied law at the University of Salamanca. He then continued his studies at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he earned his doctorate in law.

In 1974, he joined the legal team of the Spanish Navy. He was very good at his studies, graduating at the top of his class. Five years later, in 1979, he joined the Counsel of the Spanish Council of State. This is a very important legal advisory body in Spain. While there, he helped write an opinion about Spain joining NATO.

Books and Other Activities

Federico Trillo has written several books about law and political ideas. Some of his well-known works include El poder político en los dramas de Shakespeare (Political Power in Shakespeare's Dramas).

He also helped start the Association for Studies for Social Progress. He is a member of the Spanish Commission of Military History.
