Felida is a small community in Clark County, Washington, in the United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the government for statistics. However, it doesn't have its own local government like a city.

In 2020, about 9,526 people lived in Felida. The name "Felida" comes from Felidae, which is the scientific name for the family of cats. A post office was opened here in 1890, but it closed in 1906.

Exploring Felida's Past

Origin of the name Felida, Washington
Origin of the name Felida

The area around Felida has a rich history. It is close to where the Chinookan people once had a large town called Cathlapotle. This town was home to 700 to 800 people. They lived in at least 14 big plank houses.

The famous Lewis and Clark Expedition explored this area between 1804 and 1806. They would have seen the Chinookan town. To remember the Chinookan people, a replica of a Cathlapotle plank house was built nearby. You can find it at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. It was officially opened on March 29, 2005.

How Felida Got Its Name

The story of how Felida got its name is quite interesting. A post office was set up in 1890. It was located northeast of Vancouver Lake.

The first postmaster, Marian E. McIrvin, wanted to name the post office Lakeview. But postal officials said there was already a place in Washington state called Lakeview. So, McIrvin's father-in-law suggested the name Felida, and it stuck.

There's another story about the name. Some say the post office was first suggested to be called Powley, after a local person. But the post office didn't like that name. They suggested Polly instead. C.C. Lewis, who was the postmaster at the time, thought Polly sounded like a name for a parrot. He wanted to name it after his cat, Thomas. He sent in the names Thomas, Tomcat, and Felidae. The post office liked Felida the best, and that's how the community got its name.
