Feliks Gromov: A Naval Leader

Feliks Gromov spent most of his life serving in the navy. He joined the navy in 1955 when he was 18 years old. His career took him from being a young officer to leading the entire Russian Navy.

Early Life and Training

Gromov started his naval journey in his hometown of Vladivostok. He studied at the S.O. Makarov Pacific Higher Naval School. He graduated from this school in 1959. After graduating, he began his service as an officer.

Serving on Ships

Early in his career, Gromov worked on different types of naval ships. He served on a destroyer, which is a fast warship. For a short time in 1961, he also worked with strategic missile troops. This was part of an exchange program.

He returned to the navy in 1962. He then served on the Sverdlov-class cruiser Admiral Senyavin. He also served on the Kotlin-class destroyer Vdokhnovennyy. Later, he became the commander of the cruisers Senyavin and Dmitriy Pozharsky. A commander is the person in charge of a ship.

Rising Through the Ranks

Gromov continued to move up in his naval career. In 1977, he became the commander of a group of surface ships in the Baltic Fleet. The Baltic Fleet is a large naval group. In 1982, he moved to the Soviet Northern Fleet. This is another important part of the navy.

By 1984, he was the deputy commander of the Soviet Northern Fleet. This meant he was the second-in-command. In 1988, he was promoted again. He became the commander of the entire Soviet Northern Fleet.

Leading the Russian Navy

After the Soviet Union broke apart, Feliks Gromov was given a very important job. In 1992, he became the Commander-in-Chief of the new Russian Navy. This meant he was the top leader of the entire navy.

In 1996, he received an even higher rank. President Boris Yeltsin promoted him to Admiral of the Fleet. This is one of the highest ranks in the navy. Gromov retired from service on November 7, 1997. He was 60 years old at the time. This was the usual retirement age for admirals. He was buried at the Federal Military Memorial Cemetery.
