Ferdinand the Bull is a classic animated short film from 1938. It was made by Walt Disney Productions and released by RKO Radio Pictures. The film was directed by Dick Rickard. It tells the story of a gentle bull based on a popular children's book. The book, called The Story of Ferdinand, was written by Munro Leaf in 1936. The music for the film was created by Albert Hay Malotte.

Story of Ferdinand

The film begins with many young bulls playing together. They like to run around and playfully butt heads. However, Ferdinand is different from the others. All he wants to do is sit quietly under a shady cork tree. His favorite activity is to smell the beautiful flowers.

Ferdinand's Childhood

One day, Ferdinand's mother notices he is not playing with the other bulls. She asks him why he prefers to be alone. Ferdinand explains, "All I want to do is to sit and smell the flowers!" His mother understands and supports his gentle nature.

Growing Up

As years pass, Ferdinand grows into the largest and strongest bull in the group. The other bulls dream of becoming famous. Their biggest goal is to be chosen for the exciting bullfights in Madrid, Spain. But Ferdinand still does not care about fighting. He just wants to enjoy the flowers.

A Trip to Madrid

One day, five men arrive to choose bulls for the bullfight. The other bulls try to look as tough as possible to impress them. Ferdinand, however, stays calm and continues to smell the flowers. When he goes to sit down, he accidentally sits on a bumblebee! The bee's sting makes Ferdinand jump up in pain. He starts running wildly, knocking over the other bulls and even tearing down a tree. The five men are very impressed by his sudden strength. They cheer loudly and decide to take Ferdinand to Madrid for the bullfight.

The Big Day

The day of the bullfight arrives, and there is a lot of excitement. Posters around the city call him "Ferdinand the Fierce." The event begins with the banderilleros, picadors, and the matador entering the ring. The crowd cheers loudly for the matador. A woman in the audience throws a bouquet of flowers, which the matador catches.

Finally, it is Ferdinand's turn to enter the arena. He looks around, wondering why he is there. The banderilleros and picadors are scared and hide. The matador is also terrified because Ferdinand looks so big and strong. But Ferdinand notices the bouquet of flowers in the matador's hand. He walks over, scaring the matador away, and simply starts smelling the flowers.

The matador becomes very angry because Ferdinand is not interested in fighting. Ferdinand is only interested in the beautiful scent of the flowers. Eventually, he is led out of the arena. He is taken back home, where he happily continues to sit under his favorite cork tree and smell the flowers.
