Iris fernaldii, also known as Fernald's iris, is a special type of iris flower. It grows only in western Northern California. This makes it an "endemic" species, meaning it's unique to that area.

This beautiful plant is found in the California Coast Ranges, including places like the Santa Cruz Mountains and around the San Francisco Bay Area. You can find it growing from about 50 feet (15 meters) up to 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) high. Near the coast, it likes lots of sun. But further inland, it prefers some shade in the afternoon.

In Marin County, you might not find pure Fernald's iris anymore. This is because it has naturally mixed its genes with another type of iris called Douglas iris. This mixing is called "hybridization."

What Does Fernald's Iris Look Like?

Iris fernaldii spreads out using special underground stems called rhizomes. Think of rhizomes like underground roots that help the plant grow new shoots.

Its leaves are a cool gray-green color. They often have pink, red, or purple shades along their edges and at their bases. These plants usually grow to be about 1 foot (30 centimeters) tall.

The flowers are usually yellow and have gray veins. They often grow in pairs on a single stem. The color of the flowers can be creamy white, a rich yellow, or even a pale yellow. Sometimes, though it's rare, you might even see a light lavender flower!

Growing Fernald's Iris in Your Garden

Iris fernaldii is a popular ornamental plant. This means people grow it because it's pretty! You can find it at special plant nurseries.

It's a great choice for many types of gardens:

  • Traditional flower beds
  • Native plant gardens, which use plants that naturally grow in the area
  • Habitat gardens, which help local wildlife
  • Gardens that save water (called drought tolerant gardens)
  • Natural landscaping, where gardens look more wild and natural

It's also used in habitat restoration projects. These projects help bring natural areas back to health. If you live in a warmer place, this iris might need a little bit of water during the summer.
