Fernando Rubens Pasi Giudicelli (born March 1, 1906, died December 28, 1968) was a famous Brazilian football player. People in Brazil often called him just Fernando. He was born and passed away in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Fernando was a Midfielder and played in the first ever FIFA World Cup in 1930 for Brazil. He played for many different football clubs in Brazil, Italy, Switzerland, France, Portugal, and Spain. He was also known for wearing a special mariner's cap while playing! Besides playing, Fernando also helped other South American players move to Europe to play football.

Fernando's Football Journey

Fernando Giudicelli was born in Rio de Janeiro. He was a very skilled central midfield player. His family had roots in Italy.

Starting His Career in Brazil

Fernando began his football journey around 1924 with America FC in Rio de Janeiro. At that time, America FC was one of the best clubs in Carioca football.

In July 1927, he joined Fluminense FC. He played 90 games for Fluminense until June 1931.

Fernando played for the Brazil national football team in the 1930 FIFA World Cup in Uruguay. His first game was against Yugoslavia, which Brazil lost 1–2. He also played in Brazil's second match, where they won 4–0 against Bolivia.

His third and last game for the national team was in August 1930. Brazil beat Yugoslavia 4–1 in Rio.

Moving to Europe: Italy and Switzerland

Between June and August 1931, Fernando and some players from Botafogo FC went on a trip to Europe with CR Vasco da Gama. They played 12 matches in Portugal and Spain, winning eight of them.

After this trip, Fernando decided to stay in Europe. He became a professional player in Italy for FC Torino. At that time, football in Rio was still an amateur sport. Fernando was considered an oriundo, which meant he was an Italian descendant returning to his family's homeland. This allowed him to play professionally in Italy.

He played for Torino from September 1931 to April 1933. In his first season, he played 28 times and scored one goal. In the next season, he played 12 times.

Fernando also spent some time back in Rio. During these visits, he helped other South American players move to Europe. For example, he convinced Démosthenes Magalhães to join him at Torino. Démosthenes even changed his name to Demostene Bertini to make it seem like he had Italian origins.

Later, Fernando had an offer to join CA River Plate in Argentina. However, he joined the Swiss club Young Fellows Zürich for the 1933–34 season. Another famous Brazilian player, Fausto dos Santos, also played there. Fernando returned to Rio during the winter break, trying to find more players for Swiss clubs. But he did not go back to Zürich. Instead, he played for America FC in Rio.

Playing in France, Portugal, and Spain

From 1934 to 1935, Fernando Giudicelli played in Bordeaux, France, likely for Girondins. After that season, he went back to Brazil again. This time, he convinced goalkeeper Jaguaré Bezerra de Vasconcelos and defender Marins de Araújo Viana "Vianinha" to join him in Europe.

They planned to go to Italy, but when they arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, they heard about the start of the Second Italo-Abyssinian War. So, they decided not to continue to Italy. Instead, they joined Sporting CP in Lisbon. They were the first Brazilian players in Sporting's history!

Fernando only played two matches for Sporting. One was a friendly game, and the other was a championship match where he was sent off (kicked out of the game) after arguing with the referee. Jaguaré stayed longer with Sporting and later moved to Olympique Marseille in France. Vianinha stayed in Portugal and won national championships with Sporting and FC Porto.

Fernando Giudicelli then moved to Real Madrid in Spain. He was the first Brazilian player to join the club! In December 1935, he played one league match for Real Madrid against Racing Santander. After this, he had a disagreement with his coach, Francisco Bru, and was suspended.

In January 1936, Fernando was in France. He ended up playing for FC Antibes. He played 10 top-division matches and scored one goal for them in the 1935–36 season. In the 1936–37 season, he played 19 more matches for Antibes and scored seven goals. Vianinha also joined him at Antibes for a short time that season.
