Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gómez (born 26 July 1962) is a Spanish judge and politician. He has been the Minister of the Interior since June 2018. He is an independent politician who works closely with the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party. He has also been a Member of the Congress of Deputies for Cádiz at different times.
Grande-Marlaska became well-known as a judge in the early 2000s. He worked at the Audiencia Nacional, which is a special court in Spain. There, he handled many important cases. He also served as a member of the General Council of the Judiciary. This group helps manage the Spanish court system. He was part of it from 2013 to 2018.

Biography
Early Life and Career
Fernando Grande-Marlaska was born in Bilbao, Spain. His father, Avelino Grande, was a police officer in Bilbao. Fernando started his career as a judge in 1987. He first worked in a court in Santoña, Cantabria. Later, in 1990, he moved to a court in Bilbao, where he stayed for nine years. He then became a presiding judge in the Criminal Division of the Provincial Court of Biscay.
In 2003, he moved to Madrid to work as an investigating judge.
A year later, in 2004, he joined the Audiencia Nacional. He filled in for another judge, Baltasar Garzón, in a very important court. This is where he became known across Spain for his work.
Work as a Judge
Fernando Grande-Marlaska worked at the Audiencia Nacional for several years. He handled many significant cases. In 2007, he took over another important court, the Central Examining Court No. 3.
One of the most important cases he handled was about a plane crash in Turkey. This accident, known as the Yak-42 accident, happened in 2003. It involved 62 soldiers returning from Afghanistan. He investigated the accident to find out what happened.
He also dealt with other cases, including those involving public order and consumer protection. In 2012, he became the President of the Criminal Chamber of the Audiencia Nacional. This was a very important leadership role in the court.
In 2013, he was chosen to be a member of the General Council of the Judiciary. This group oversees how the courts in Spain work.
Minister of the Interior
In 2018, Pedro Sánchez, who was the President of the Government of Spain, chose Fernando Grande-Marlaska to be the Minister of the Interior. This job means he is in charge of public safety and security in Spain.
Soon after becoming minister, he talked about changing the fences between Morocco and the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla. These changes included removing barbed wire and adding new technology to make the borders safer. Work on these changes started in late 2019. In 2020, he announced that the fences would also be made taller.
During the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the government declared a "State of Alarm". This gave the central government special powers to manage the situation. Minister Grande-Marlaska was one of the main officials in charge. He was given control over all police forces in Spain, including state, regional, and local police. He also had the power to close roads and borders if needed. He worked to make sure people followed the rules to keep everyone safe.
In May 2019, there was an increase in people crossing the border into Ceuta. Minister Grande-Marlaska responded by sending more police officers to the border. He also worked on returning people to Morocco. Regarding children who arrived without their parents, he supported efforts to send them back if it was considered safe and beneficial for them.
