Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gómez (born 26 July 1962) is a Spanish judge and politician. He has been the Minister of the Interior since June 2018. He is an independent politician, which means he doesn't belong to a specific political party. However, he often works closely with the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.
Before becoming a minister, Grande-Marlaska was a well-known judge. He worked at the Audiencia Nacional, which is a special court in Spain. There, he handled many important cases. He also served as a member of the General Council of the Judiciary. This group helps manage the Spanish court system.

Biography
Early Life and Career as a Judge
Fernando Grande-Marlaska was born in Bilbao, Spain. His father, Avelino Grande, was a police officer in Bilbao. Fernando decided to become a judge and started his career in 1987.
His first job as a judge was in Santoña, Cantabria. He then moved to Bilbao's Court of Inquiry No. 2, where he worked for nine years. During this time, he became a presiding judge in the Criminal Division of the Provincial Court of Biscay.
In 2003, he moved to Madrid. The next year, in 2004, he joined the Audiencia Nacional. This is where he became widely recognized for his work.
Working at the Audiencia Nacional
From 2004 to 2006, Fernando Grande-Marlaska worked as a substitute judge at the Central Examining Court number 5. After that, he was assigned to the Criminal Division of the Audiencia Nacional.
In 2007, he took over Central Examining Court No. 3. Here, he handled a very important case involving a plane accident in Turkey. This accident, known as the Yak-42 accident, happened in 2003 and involved many soldiers. Judge Grande-Marlaska worked to find out what happened and ensure justice for those affected. He called important military leaders and former ministers to testify.
In 2012, he became the President of the Criminal Chamber of the Audiencia Nacional. This was a very important role in the Spanish court system. In 2013, he was also appointed as a member of the General Council of the Judiciary. This council helps oversee all judges in Spain.
Becoming Minister of the Interior
In 2018, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, chose Fernando Grande-Marlaska to be the Minister of the Interior. This means he is in charge of national security, police forces, and border control in Spain.
Soon after becoming minister, he announced plans to improve border security. This included removing the old barbed wire from fences between Morocco and the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla. He also planned to make the fences taller and add new technology to keep the borders safe. These improvements started in December 2019.
In March 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, the Spanish government declared a "State of Alarm". This gave the central government special powers to manage the health crisis. Minister Grande-Marlaska was one of the key leaders in charge. He oversaw all police forces across Spain, including national, regional, and local ones. He also had the power to close roads and borders to help control the spread of the virus. He issued orders to police to ensure people followed the new safety rules.
In May 2019, there was an increase in people crossing the border into Ceuta. Minister Grande-Marlaska took action to manage the situation. He sent more police officers to the border to help keep it secure. He also supported efforts to help unaccompanied children who had crossed the border, ensuring they were looked after.
