Fernando Krahn (1935 – 18 February 2010) was a talented Chilean cartoonist and artist. He was famous for his cartoons, which appeared in well-known magazines like Esquire, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic. In 1973, he had to leave his home country, Chile, because of political issues after a big change in government.
After moving to Spain, Fernando Krahn published more than 40 children's books. His work was so good that he won the SM Ediciones' International Illustration Prize in 2001.
Fernando Krahn's Life Story
Fernando Krahn was born in Santiago de Chile. He started drawing when he was young, between 1952 and 1956. However, his professional career as a cartoonist and artist began in 1961. At that time, he lived in New York City until 1969. During these years, his cartoons were featured in popular magazines such as Esquire, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and The Reporter.
He returned to Chile in 1971 and worked for a magazine called Ercilla. But in 1973, he had to move to Sitges, Spain. This was to escape the political problems in Chile, which included a change in government on September 11.
After receiving a special grant from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Krahn was able to create his first animated film. It was called El crimen perfecto and was made in 1976. In 1984, he started working for the Barcelona newspaper La Vanguardia. He continued to publish cartoons and animated works there for the rest of his life.
Fernando Krahn also contributed to other newspapers around the world. These included El País, International Herald Tribune, Die Zeit, and La Repubblica. He wrote and illustrated over forty children's books. These books were published in the United States, Spain, Chile, and Venezuela. His amazing work on these books earned him the SM Ediciones' International Illustration Prize in 2001.
Besides his work as an illustrator, he also led a studio called Krahnfactory. This studio focused on animated motion, and he worked as a scriptwriter and producer there. His art has been shown in a few exhibitions. For example, in 2006, Sabadell held an exhibition focusing on his early work. Another exhibition took place in Lleida in 2008.
Family and Passing
Fernando Krahn had a daughter named Fernanda and two sons, Santiago and Matias. He was married to a Chilean writer named María de la Luz Uribe. Sadly, she passed away in 1994. Fernando Krahn illustrated some of his wife's books. It is believed that her death influenced his later artwork.
Fernando Krahn died in Barcelona on February 18, 2010. He passed away due to an intestinal issue.
